Ambient intelligence lab

Ambient intelligence lab
The lab's mission is to become a reference pole for the development and testing of specific enabling technologies (artificial vision, smart systems, biometric and multimedia technologies, video-surveillance, RFID) for the creation of smart spaces.
In particular, the lab focuses on the development of image recognition systems, artificial vision and multimedia content management, with applications in the fields of ambient and IT security.

Ambient intelligence for multimedia content management
Ambient intelligence methods, technologies and software, together with the progress made in all IT fields, are leading to the development of innovative multimedia content management approaches, easily adaptable to the needs of different user categories. In particular, the conceptual and computing instruments of Ambient Intelligence have direct applications to the vast field of Cultural Resource Management (CRM).
In this field, the lab will focus in particular on the following research and technology transfer issues:
- access to multimedia contents, placing emphasis on techniques for the automated classification, indexing and retrieval of multimedia materials on the basis of their semantic contents
- development of interactive tools enabling users to personalise their multimedia contents' search according to their requirements
- integration of content-based search systems by means of repositories based on the digital library paradigm.

Ambient intelligence for ambient and IT security
The challenge of creating intelligent systems for automated ambient monitoring was spurred on the one hand by the need for greater safety and security manifested through the demand for specific individual and collective services (e.g. control of urban areas, public buildings and sensitive areas), and on the other by the growing need to provide buildings and dwellings with technologies facilitating and making safer the life of the elderly and the disabled.
In this field, the lab will develop and transfer to companies biometric technologies for identifying individuals through face and fingerprint recognition. These technologies can be used in combination with CCTV systems, through interaction between sensors located in different adjoining areas, to improve ambient security, but also to personalise smart spaces.
