ICTs for medicine lab
Medicine is one of the sectors in which ICTs are facing increasingly difficult challenges, as they relentlessly push back the frontier of innovation. Thanks to the possibility of acquiring and analysing biological data through increasingly sophisticated equipment (from full body CT scanner to breath analysis), the scientific community can collect huge amounts of information for diagnosis and treatments, saved as digital data available for remote sharing. This extensive information enables creation of computing models that simulate morphology and physiology, which can be used for activities of great clinical importance, such as surgery planning or simulation, medical staff training, or even the control of a robot able to perform directly certain steps of a surgical procedure.

GRID is a platform enabling the evolution and use of these computing models: it is based on open standards and enables the sharing of massive computing and memory resources within virtual organisations (nodes), physically located on an intranet or on the Internet. The breakdown of distance barriers is a key factor in enabling Sardinia to play an active role in the international debate on technology applications for medicine, a priority area of regional, national and European policies.

The lab involves the planning and creation of:

- distributed infrastructure for clinical applications, in particular systems able to analyse and handle large amounts of clinical data. A possible application is for instance comparison, for epidemiological and diagnostic purposes, between an individual patient's data and the data already acquired on a regional scale
- innovative visual analysis techniques for pre-surgery and surgical procedures, thanks to innovative 3D data acquisition and display systems (olographic, HDR, tiled)
- advanced medical personnel training technology, in particular, through the development and implementation of surgery simulators.
