Open source software lab
Open-source software developers do not usually operate in the field of application domains, such as substitute filing systems for public agencies or CRM/ERP systems (Corporate Information Systems); nevertheless, some Italian organisations have invested in these spheres and have launched innovative and stimulating open-source projects. The lab aims at promoting the Free Libre Open Source Software culture (FLOSS) and its solutions among Public Administrations and enterprises.
The lab carries out research and technology development activities. Initially, research focused on the development of an open-source business intelligence framework, the main purpose being the development of know-how and quality software for cross-cutting applications. After establishing contacts with enterprises and public agencies, the lab started developing a second project (GAS, Gestione Alberghiera Sardegna – Hotel Management in Sardinia), for creating an open-source management software for hotels and tourist accommodation facilities, linked to an online promotional and booking system. This project can be tested by local tourist systems, consortia or individual tourist accommodation facilities, and later released to enterprises and tourist promotion agencies.
