Lab for collaborative multiplatform TV programme production
This lab aims to become a reference area within the Technology Park of Sardinia for the development and testing of technologies, applications and services for the production, personalisation and distribution of multimedia content, with a focus on video.
The lab is working on the possibility of extending to TV production the Web 2.0 participatory model.
At the present time, TV programme production and distribution are based on centralised processes, requiring significant investments. However, recent technology developments are opening up new scenarios. Firstly, the fact that video production and post-production technologies have for some time now become affordable for consumers has given rise to a huge quantity of user-generated video contents. Secondly, the Internet, thanks to its active user communities, has revealed self-organisation capabilities comparable, if not superior to those of many environments governed by a centralised and hierarchical structure. Finally, growing distribution and access technology capabilities are creating demand for a broad range of contents.
Adapting the Web 2.0 content production-validation-distribution model to the television industry means paving the road to decentralised, collaborative programme production. In this way it would be possible to set up, with low investment, thematic TV channels featuring, for instance, emerging artists (concerts, short films, plays, etc.), scientific communities (seminars, lectures, experiments, etc.), cultural associations, tourist organisations, etc.
This model can rely on traditional distribution channels (DVB, IPTB, mobile), but can also bypass them, by assembling personalised programmes directly on the final user's PC and distributing them through the domestic local network to low-cost thin clients connected to TV sets.
The Collaborative TV lab’s activities include:
- creation of an open-source technology platform for the production of TV programmes through automated aggregation of user-generated and user-selected contents
- collaboration with enterprises under cluster project "Multiplatform collaborative TV: technologies and applications", which, through tutorials and experimental activities and relying on the lab’s equipment, enables participating enterprises to expand their video distribution capabilities
- support to development and innovation projects proposed by companies on personalised audiovisual production and distribution.
