Open media-center lab

the Open media center lab
The Open media-center lab (OMC) aims at promoting and developing industrial research projects in the fields of home entertainment, home automation and human-machine interface, with a focus on usability and technology interaction with the open-source world.
The lab's mission is to develop and test new hardware and software architecture and new use models for multimedia applications, interactive TV and home automation, applying technology to domestic environments and fully integrating it with daily life.

From entertainment to home automation
The Media center is more than a hardware and software platform designed for viewing films or listening to music from various sources. A new-generation Media center is the heart of a home automation network designed for home entertainment, domestic environment control and the delivery and use of new digital contents, also generated by distributed communities. This opens up interesting business opportunities also for enterprises not directly involved in the ICT sector.

One of the lab’s key interests is the development of XDOMO (eXtensible DOMotic Openmedia-center), a project for the creation of a domestic Media center that involves various aspects of industrial design. As concerns function, it offers a home automation solution based on integration of products and services for home management and control. It is addressed to the assistive domotic, home automation and home entertainment sectors and is designed to provide smart user interfaces responsive to context and use scenarios.

Multi-Touch and tangible user interface
Multi-Touch technology recognises the position on which a display is touched, expanding the interaction opportunities with the objects located on the display/surface that is touched. To date, research on multi-touch screens has reached a level of maturity opening up exciting new scenarios. Possible applications are endless and are set to revolutionise human-machine interaction, making it increasingly efficient, usable and intuitive. For instance, t-Frame is a project of the lab for a low-cost multi-touch installation that can be used on large surfaces and multi-user interactive walls.
