Bioinformatics
The Bioinformatics platform provides access to essential bio-IT applications and resources for biomedical research, in particular personalised medicine.
The platform's main activities include:
- R&D targeting in particular development of new methods for computational analysis of biochemistry and genetic data and the application of computing instruments to the study of biomedical problems
- Support and services aimed at developing new software systems and databases and at providing advanced bioinformatics instruments and database services both to the scientific and business community located at the Technology Park and to other research teams in the Region
- Training of young researchers.
The platform operates in the following research areas:
1. Computational biology of diseases: genetic and epigenetic variations, analysis and modelling of data from microarrays
2. Genome informatics: transcriptome data analysis, proteome data analysis, comparative genome analysis, alternative splicing and gene regulation
3. Integrative models and simulation structures
4. Systems biology: gene networks and their analysis.
Equipment
1. Software and database for:
- Sequence analysis
- Protein modelling and structure analysis
- Genotyping
- Gene expression
2. Hardware:
- High-performance data management system with 20 processing nodes provided with 64-bit CPU
- High-speed communication systems supporting Ethernet/FastEthernet protocols, Ethernet Gigabit modules in copper and optical fibre and 10 GB Ethernet connections
- Server for fiber-optic network management
- Computational clusters with 48 processing nodes (Opteron 265)
- Cray XD1 cluster, FPGA integrated
