Fase 1 forms part of the package of actions for the creation of the Biomedical and health technology district in Sardinia.

The Biomedical technology district, located in Southern Sardinia (in the areas of Cagliari and Pula), was proposed by the Region of Sardinia under the "Technology Districts" initiative launched by the Italian Ministry of Research (FPA for Research).

The district area and, as to its experimental portion, Ogliastra, have been designated "Pole of excellence for bioinformatic technologies applied to personalised medicine" by the Ministry for Technological Innovation under programme "ICTs and territories of excellence" (FPA for the Information Society).

The distric has the following aims:
- create a critical mass of highly competitive resources, activities, projects and initiatives
- attract and enhance top-level scientific and technological expertise
- define research priority areas, focusing on the development of new products and processes
- foster integration between enterprises, research centres and universities.

The district strengthens and organises local conditions favouring, thanks to collaboration between researchers, companies and the health service, the conception, testing, validation, development and implementation of new diagnostic and treatment procedures based on the principles of advanced. personalised medicine. Another, underlying objective is to raise the district’s international profile and attract external investment to create a biomedicine and biotechnology pole.

The district bases its actions on the following main strategic lines:

1. define a strong scientific identity
2. invest in key know-how
3. integrate the health system

The district’s scientific profile will be strengthened through:
- strong support for the study of autoimmune diseases, with special emphasis on those with high prevalence and public health impact in the Region
- strong support to genomic research, starting from study of the genetic isolation of Sardinan communities
- concurrent increase in research on the contribution of environmental factors to the development of those diseases
- strong support and back-up to cutting-edge local pharmacological research.

The district will focus its activities and resources on the following priority areas:
- Medical biotechnologies for diagnostics and drug discovery & development, aimed at identifying new diagnostic and treatment targets, and at biodrug design, development and production
- Bioinformatics, to analyse the large datasets generated by high-processivity tools and to design research programmes based on virtual biological systems
- ICT for medicine, to improve patient and health service management and to explore innovative areas of biomedicine, such as predictive imaging of clinical trials of new drugs or treatments.
