Technology transfer

Patenting and intellectual property protection
This service is available to SMEs and public and private research centres operating in Sardinia. It is delivered on the basis of calls published in regional newspapers and on the Sardegna Ricerche website.

Applicants meeting eligibility conditions are given access to the service, delivered as indicated in the call, basically in the following manner:
1. Companies can freely choose their own advisor, who must be a member of the Italian Register of Industrial Property Consultants. Another key requirement is for the consultants or consultancy firms to be external to the entity submitting the application.
2. The consultant, supported by an expert from Sardegna Ricerche, then carries out in-depth examination of the invention at the beneficiary’s premises, to assess its patentability.
Patents can be granted to inventions consisting of new products, plant and equipment and processes that are susceptible of industrial application; aesthetic creations concerning the shape or aspect of an industrial product are also patentable.
3. The consultant then prepares a first draft of the patent application, including description, claims and drawings, for discussion and review with the beneficiary.
4. The final text of the patent application is then prepared and filed with the competent patent office.

Support and consultancy are also provided in all the steps following filing of the application: patent prosecution, licensing, translations, extensions, etc.
In addition to the costs for preparing and filing the application, eligible costs include those for translation, and consultancy during the patent prosecution process (interaction with the patent office). Filing tax, renewal tax and similar costs are not eligible.

To raise awareness of the service, seminars and thematic meetings are regularly organised, during which the experts of Sardegna Ricerche illustrate the contents of calls and provide general advice on the patenting process.
