Description
Saturday 4 April at 15:00, Sardegna Ricerche in collaboration with the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, Regional Ministry for Agriculture and Agro-pastoral reform, is organising a conference on "Natural Cork Stoppers and Wine: friends in taste and allies for the environment".

The conference, which will be held in the framework of Vinitaly 2009 at the Puccini Hall of the Arena Congress Centre, in pavilion 6/7, is one of the initiatives implemented under project "Innovation and enhancement of the natural cork industry".

The event will open with screening of the official DVD "The Sardinian Cork Industry", which describes the history, tradition and production of cork, and its processing to obtain one of its main end products for the wine industry: the natural cork stopper. The video also shows applications of cork in other sectors, including the most innovative and environmentally-friendly ones.

The first part of the conference, focused on the link between natural cork stoppers and wine, will include presentation of:

- The results of a qualitative survey carried out in four European countries, on consumer perceptions and evaluations when uncorking a bottle and drinking wine

- The new set of Standards on production and use of cork stoppers in the wine industry, currently being drawn up by a workgroup comprising Federlegno (Cork Group), the Italian Wine Union, the Italian Industrialists' Association - Northern Sardinia Section, Agris Sardegna - Cork and Silviculture Research Department, and the Sacro Cuore Catholic University of Piacenza - Oenology and Food Engineering Institute

The second part of the conference will focus on the relationships between natural cork stoppers and environmental requirements, linked to the conservation and improvement of an extensive woodland heritage that plays a key role as a landscape, environmental, production and biodiversity conservation resource. This session will include presentations on:

- The strategies of International WWF for the conservation of cork woods in the Mediterranean and support of the cork industry, from tree management to the production of certified, sustainable products for the wine and bio-architecture industries

- Awareness-raising, information and promotion of sorted collection of stoppers in natural cork, a natural material which can be recycled countless times.

Official language: Italian.
