GeoWeb and mobile user experience lab

GeoWeb Lab
The ancient Greeks used the word topos to indicate the physical characteristics of a place, and the word choros to refer to a place as experienced and described by human beings.
Today, we can witness and contribute to the merging of topos ed il choros: in the near future, we will be able to locate any object on the web through an Internet address and in space by means of its geographical coordinates. This network of texts, images, sounds, videoclips and even physical objects represents the future of the Internet: the GeoWeb.

Geobrowsers offer the possibility of browsing georeferenced resources, selecting preferred ones and building itineraries which can then be shared with other persons, creating a social network. Moreover, functions such as RSS, GeoRSS and GPX codes allow interoperability with other platforms, such as satellite navigators or RSS feed readers.
Through new web page presentation based on the magnifying lens metaphor, a collection of images can be viewed more effectively. The object observed is small but occupies the central and most important portion of the screen. On the other hand, the peripheral objects can refer to increasingly larger regions, but are shown in smaller images.

The aim of this lab is to develop new forms of interaction between individuals and the ubiquitous computer, through the use of proximity technologies. A first prototype, based on 2D barcode technologies has been created; the second one, currently under development, will also incorporate the new NFC technologies. The lab's R&D activity can generate interesting results, by making available to enterprises interim results, such as open-source libraries for visual tag recognition and NFC modules.
