Regional context
Some pathologies with a strong genetic predisposition component have a particularly high incidence in Sardinia, one of the consequences of the historic isolation of its population:
- Diabetes mellitus: Sardinia is the Italian region with the highest number of new cases of type I Diabetes per year
- Multiple sclerosis: for this disease too, Sardinia has the highest prevalence in Italy
- Thalassemias: the beta-thalassemia mean carrier rate for Sardinia is 10.3%; alpha-thalassemia carrier rate is also high, ranging from a minimum of 10% to a maximum of 37.7%, according to geographical areas
- Other conditions, such as coeliac disease and rare genetic diseases such as Wilson’s disease or autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome, type 1.
